Combi Boilers

 

Combis are now the best selling boiler type for gas central heating in Britain. They've been proven steadfast, reliable and tough. Most Combis will settle snugly into an average cupboard. They are also economical to run. And can certainly produce an endless stream of hot water.

But it has to be mentioned that the flow can be limited if other taps are running simultaneously. That said, it provides almost instantaneous steaming hot water. Literally on tap, whenever you need it, with no waste. There is no storage cylinder to heat first or to run cold and there are no tanks to find space for.

Pros

• Almost instantaneous hot water
• Drinkable water at all taps
• No tank in the roof space
• No cylinder so more space
• No airing cupboard so more space

Cons

• Draw-off can be limited, as can flow rates
• Delayed hot water in summer months with some models (not storage combis)
• No airing cupboard for storage
• No immersion heater so no back-up

Water Problems

Over 60% of the UK lives in a hard water area. This essentially means that when water is heated, hard scale forms on washing machines, showers, dishwashers, boilers and taps. This gets worse the longer it is left, leading to expensive maintenance costs or having to completely replace the affected product.

 

1. Water Hardness

 

There are two types of hardness: 

• Temporary hardness
• Permanent hardness

Temporary hardness comes out of the water when it's heated and is deposited as scale and fur on kettles, boilers and taps. Also appears as scum or film on tea and coffee.

 

Permanent hardness is unaffected by heating.

 

Solution: Water Softener, Scale Inhibitor, Water Filter.

 

2. Chlorine

 

Added at water treatment plants to destroy contaminants, disinfect the water and minimise bacteria. Gives water an unpleasant taste and scent.

 

Solution: Water Filters, Reverse Osmosis

 

3. Particles & Rust

 

Come from a gradual breakdown of the lining of concrete or iron mains water pipes or from sediment that has been disturbed.
