The RCM Group

The RCM Group is now the largest manufacturer of cylinders in the UK and has used the same blueprint for its success in the development and production of its new stainless steel unvented range of cylinders.

They are designed specifically for the UKmarket made from high quality 'Duplex' stainless steel, backed by a fully transferable 25 year guarantee.

What is mainspressure?

These units allow you to connect the Ultrasteel directly to the mains via the safety valves provided. This allows you to have power showers without the need for noisy shower pumps and means no cold water cistern tanks are required in the loft.

Ease of installation

The unit comes with a full, easy-to-follow fitting instruction booklet and all the components you will need. All the connections are at the front of the unit within a 90o arc. The unit can be sited almost anywhere, including the garage. This gives you the added advantage of 100% usable hot water and means that possibly a smaller sized unit can be used to achieve the required literage.

Duplex stainless steel for ultimate
peace of mind

The Ultrasteel is manufactured from highest quality Duplex stainless steel. Care must be taken not to confuse this high performance metal with the inferior grades employed by some of our competitors. This type of steel is far more resistant to corrosion than glass lined models and therefore offers a much longer life. Consequently, no anode is required. Duplex stainless steel provides for a much lighter and easier to handle unit.

High flow rated controls deal with multiple hot water applications

Our standard valves offer exceptional flow rates and deal with most domestic applications. Larger valve options are also available for industrial and commercial use by special order.

Fast reheat and thick insulation means
cheap to run

The coil is designed to heat the whole of the cylinder contents and sits very low in the base of the unit (unlike conventional coils). Add to this the coils large surface area and a very fast recovery is achieved on 100% of its volume. High heat retention is then achieved by use of 50mm thick
CFC/HCFC Free (ODP ZERO) lagging.

Reasons for external expansion

When developing Ultrasteel, we drew on all our group’s experience of previous unvented products we had manufactured. Earlier mains pressure
units included both internal and external expansions and, with this knowledge, we have listed below our reasons for having no hesitation in going with an external system.

Unvented cylinders with Internal expansion are known by the trade as “bubble tops”. This is an apt description as they do indeed trap a bubble
of air in the top. As the cylinder is heated up, the expansion of the hot water is taken up by the bubble.

As you probably know water under pressure absorbs air. Some people will be familiar with milky water coming from their taps. The milkyness is
the bubbles in the water formed as the air is released.

In some areas of the countr y, local conditions have led to some bubble top unvented cylinders losing their bubble prematurely. This has been
disruptive and costly for all concerned. Indeed, some have even been converted to external expansion to solve such local problems.

If the air bubble is lost, it is usually necessary to drain down the unit and refill it. As anyone with a water meter will tell you, refilling it costs money
and then the additional inconvenience of having to pay to heat the water again. You would be even more upset if you had to find and pay for a
plumber to do this for you.

Contrast this with the rubber diaphragm inside our expansion vessels. This diaphragm separates the water from the air - PROBLEMSOLVED.
The pressure can easily be checked and topped up with a foot-pump without losing a drop of water.

Add the additional flexibility of remote siting that an expansion vessel brings and the choice for us was clear - External Expansion.

Below are a number of examples, along with data to help you decide which unit is right for you.

There are a number of points to consider along the way - firstly, how many major outlets for hot water do you have to supply?

Baths require between 55 and 100 litres,Jacuzzis require up to 550 litres. (Baths allow 30 minutes duration).

Small Showers require 7 litres per minute,
High Volume Showers require 11 litres per minute.

(Showers allow 10 minutes duration). Sinks require between 10 and 15 litres, Wash Basins require between 1 and 5 litres.

Reheat Performance
Finally, you have to estimate the number of times any one of these outlets will be used before the unit has time to recover.

The reheat performance is measured from 15°C to 60°C after drawing off 70% of the capacity.
The coil kW rating is a guide to the minimum size of boiler required to achieve the reheat times stated. Faster reheat times are achievable using twin-coil Ultrasteel units. With both coils fed simultaneously, reheat times can be reduced to almost half. The boiler power required would double.

Using Ultrasteel units in parallel

For applications where very high flowrate or larger amounts of storage are required two or more Ultrasteel units can be linked in parallel.

When linking two cylinders a seperate cold feed is taken to each one and the outlets are joined together. The flowrate available doubles (subject to the cold main).
The demand for hot water will vary considerably between types of buildings and activities taking place there, for example

An office building will require small quantities frequintly to many outlets during normal and overtime office hours.

A factory production line will have a peak demand at the breaks in the shift or at the end when the work force may all want to wash their hands simultaneously.

A sports pavilion will need to be able to provide large quantities of hot water for the teams showering needs, over a short period of time after the game.

So your selection must take into account a number of things

1) The maximum simultaneous hot wwater demand
2) The total hot water demand required
3) The required system reheat time

Taking Responsibility

We are very aware of of our long term responsibility to the planet and are doing everything possible to improve our contribution to this cause. We have chosen materials that will genuinely last a lifetime and have avoided producing the steel and glass lined units favoured by other manufacturers which typically offer a much reduced life expectancy.
Duplex stainless steel is extremely environmentally friendly. As a material it is 100% recyclable in fact over 90% of new stainless steel comes from old re-melted stainless steel. Stainless steel will go on to complete full life cycles indefinitely.
The performance of the unit with its “coil within a coil” gives fast recovery to 100% of the water content of the unit and not just part volumes like many on the market. Link this with our 50mm
CFC/HCFC free (ODP Zero) foam injection lagging which gives maximum heat retention and you have a range that is very efficient and will save money on fuel bills.

Being Committed

Our commitment goes much further than just the present, as we are constantly developing new products in the same vein. These products go towards developing renewable energy resources such as solar, wind and geothermic power which we can utilise with our high recovery twin coiled units.
Continually Evolving

All in all we take environmental issues very seriously when others just pay it lip service, and we will continue to improve and develop our processes and products to keep our self-imposed high standards in this field.
