However, condensing boilers can also offer a wide range of other benefits
Environment
Lower emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOx), mean that condensing boilers are much more environmental friendly than their conventional counterparts. They help to cut down on greenhouse gases and conserve fossil fuel resources.
Cost and Fuel
Not only do high efficiency condensing boilers help protect the environment, they also help to lower fuel bills for the homeowner. Compared with conventional boilers, condensing models get more heat out of the same amount of gas – which means less fuel used, and more savings made.
Home Comfort
The latest technology used in appliances such as The Eden X Type, means that the boiler output can be increased or decreased instantly in response to heating demand. When used with room thermostats and central heating programmers this can create a far more controllable and comfortable living environment.
Building Regulations
Building regulations from April 2005 require that new or replacement boilers installed in most domestic properties have to be condensing appliances. These must carry a SEDBUK efficiency rating of A or B. (SEDBUK = Standard Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK).
Why Condensing?
Because condensing boilers waste so little heat, the flue gases exiting the boilers are far cooler than conventional appliances. This leads under optimum conditions to the glue gases condensing inside the boiler and flue pipe the resulting water droplets (only equivalent in a acidity to lemon juice) drain into the boiler’s integral trap and out to a normal domestic drain.
What is a high efficiency condensing boiler?
High efficiency condensing boilers convert more than 90% of their fuel into heat, compared to 78% for conventional types.
They have either a larger or a second heat exchanger, which saves the heat that would otherwise escape up the flue. The flue gases cool to the point that water vapour produced during combustion condenses. Hence the name.
High efficiency condensing boilers can be easily fitted to most new and old heating systems. They're suitable for oil and gas-fuelled homes - even LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). They're usually no larger than conventional boilers. You can buy them as either combination boilers, which heat up water on demand, or conventional system boilers, where a separate hot water cylinder is required.
Is your boiler energy efficient? If it's 10-15 years old then it probably isn't. If it's 15 years old or more, then replacing it with a new high efficiency condensing boiler will save you around a third on your heating bills straight away. It'll also avoid expensive call outs. If you're fitting a new kitchen or bathroom, why not minimise cost and disruption by installing a new high efficiency condensing boiler at the same time?
Regulations introduced on 1st April 2005 in England and Wales require that most boilers fitted from now on are of the high efficiency condensing type. Your installer will be able to advise you about Energy Saving Recommended models. And that's not all... If you install the right heating controls, you could save up to 40% on your fuel bill - that's about £150 - £180 off the average bill.

Is my current boiler a high efficiency condensing boiler?
Boilers are rated according to how much of the fuel they consume is converted to heat, as a percentage. This rating is called SEDBUK - Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK.
SEDBUK ratings are from A to G, A-rated boilers being more than 90% efficient. Only 'A' or 'B' rated boilers - having efficiencies above 86% - carry the energy saving recommended logo.

Halstead have been manufacturing heating appliances in Essex since 1975.
The closure of the local and long established boiler maker, Charles Portway, led a group of its design and technical employees to form Halstead Heating and Engineering.
Led by present Joint MD, Brian Day, the company became increasingly well known in the supply of appliances to the fast growing central heating market. Following a brief period of ownership by Barlo plc, Halstead once more became independent with Andrew Marshall joining to take an equal stake in the company after ‘serving time’ on the boards of several other boiler manufacturers.
In their current joint roles, MDs Brian Day and Andrew Marshall have grown the company into what is now one of the UK’s leading boiler manufacturers. With its manufacturing and technical base still in Halstead, Essex, the company now makes a range of ‘state of the art’ gas central heating appliances regarded by installers as leading products in their sectors.
December 2000 saw the creation of Halstead’s new Technical Services and Training Centre, based in the Midlands. From its central position in Lemington Spa, the company controls a nationwide network of service engineers, as well as providing a Technical Helpline service. The purpose built Training Centre is based at the same site and provides a range of installer training courses throughout the year.
