How do hot water cylinders work?

Depending on whether you have a vented or unvented system, your water cylinder works by either a direct water supply from the mains (unvented) or an external cold water tank (vented).

Need help determining the right hot water cylinder for your property? Read on to discover the types and uses of our stock here at TradePlumbing.

Unvented: An easy and effective way to distribute water through your home, these systems work off the mains water supply, meaning you don’t need to take up space in your property with a large external tank.

Vented: These cylinders work in unison with a header tank that is usually stored in the attic of your home due to the need for gravity to produce adequate pressure. A vent pipe opens to the external world, and expansion is absorbed through pipe work.

Solar: Solar heat cylinders gain their energy from the sun. Usually, a backup immersion heater will be necessary for the UK as the sun won’t provide adequate power in the winter months.

Combination: These cylinders work similarly to a conventional vented system but incorporate said tank within the unit, meaning you don’t need tons of loft space to store an external unit. They’re great for folks who live in apartments or bungalows!

Direct: Direct cylinders heat the water via an electric immersion heater and won’t work alongside gas, oil or heat pump systems.

Indirect: Indirect cylinders work by a coil within the system, heating the water to an adequate temperature that allows for safe use—around 70 degrees Celsius.

Thermal:  Thermal store cylinders are an excellent eco-friendly pick as they often go hand in hand with other sustainable energy sources; they function much in the opposite way to traditional hot water cylinders as a heat exchanger transfers the heat to the mains water.

If you still need help choosing the correct cylinder, don’t hesitate to contact us; we are always happy to help.
