Gledhill Unvented Cylinders are Unbeaten on Quality

In 1926, brothers Norman and Joe Gledhill began manufacturing domestic copper cylinders. The Blackpool-based company ceased operation during World War II but regained strength by the mid-1950s and operated as a family-run business. These days, Gledhill prides itself on being innovative and producing industry firsts, such as being the first UK supplier to introduce foam insulation electrostatically.

What are Gledhill Cylinders used for?

Our Gledhill cylinders have a temperature and pressure relief valve pre-set at 6 bar and 95 degrees to ensure safety and protection from overheating.

  • Direct: Choose a direct cylinder to reduce the cost of your hot water bill. Designed for use with an electric supply or photovoltaic panels, these cylinders are available in a vast range of sizes and capacities of up to 300 litres.  The largest model can cope in a property with five separate water supplies due to two individual immersions for on and off-peak use. During low periods of demand, the off-peak works to heat the water and utilise economy electric tariffs. This fantastic unit benefits from a 3kW INCOLOY 825 immersion heater as the primary heat source, an additional 3kW INCOLOY 825 for emergency backup and a standard 90° elbow and drain valve.
  • Indirect: Designed for properties with conventional boiler and electrical power backup systems such as gas or oil boilers, these vessels feature a 3kW INCOLOY immersion heater for emergency backup and come in a vast range of capacities from 90-400 litres. The corrugated tube coil that connects to the boiler allows fast and efficient heat transfer compared to the performance of plain tube coils. Please note: Only 250, 300 and 400-litre models are available with an additional off-peak immersion.
  • Vented: Supplied by a cold water tank in the loft, these cylinders utilise gravity as the water is transported via a vent pipe to the hot water cylinder, which then works to heat the water. The height of the cold water tank is essential as this maintains the pressure in the heating process. As the water heats, it expands, and any excess is decanted through a vent pipe in your loft. Our huge range comes in capacities between 96 to 218 litres depending on the size and needs of your property.
  • Unvented: Without needing a water storage tank, a sealed hot water cylinder is fed directly by your cold water mains, and the incoming water supply maintains pressure. If you purchase a direct or indirect model, your heat will be supplied from either an immersion heater (direct) or a heat source outside your tank, such as a boiler or wet solar system (indirect).

When an outlet is opened in your home, the incoming cold water displaces the hot water content in the cylinder toward the open outlet at the mains pressure. Ensure you have an expansion vessel incorporated within your boiler or cylinder, which accounts for an increase of up to 4.5% of pressure!
