Before you invest in an online radiator, you need to work out which one is the best fit for your space. Factors like Output BTUs and Delta T carry concrete significance in the process of picking up the perfect size and heat output.
Radiators sellers in the UK market, mark radiator output in terms of Delta T. Delta T or ΔT is the difference between water temperature in a radiator(T1) and the temperature of the room that is being heated (T2).
Mathematically, ΔT= T2-T1
You might not be an engineer but here you will have to pick up a calculator and perform a row of calculations. For your convenience, the current European standard for domestic boilers is Delta T 50°. Before 2013, it was Delta T 60°, but now after careful analysis for adopting energy-saving mechanisms, the new general value is dropped to ΔT 50°.
Delta T (ΔT) 60° means:
85°C boiler flow temperature
65°C return temperature
20°C room temperature
Delta T (ΔT) 50° means:
75°C boiler flow temperature
55°C return temperature
20°C room temperature
Delta Value Variations: Don’t just judge the figures!
ΔT variations: ΔT 70°, ΔT 60°, ΔT 50°, ΔT 40°
Lower Delta T degrees indicate that the low energy from the boilers is needed hence reducing the electricity bills. However, it isn’t true to believe that if you want to cut short on bills, you must opt for low ΔT value radiators. If you choose ΔT 40 over Delta 50 thinking that it will be good for your space. But quite possible is that it isn’t going to do the job of heating your entire room as compared to Delta 50° and those chilled corners will keep you pricking. Therefore, to fetch the right radiator, you have to calculate the BTUs your space requires, and for that Delta-info is essential.&
(Side Note: Refer to Trade Plumbing’s special feature, BTU CALCULATOR, to calculate BTUs your space needs to get heated well)
A Practical Scenario: Delta T Conversions
Now, if you browse through your favourite radiators or heated towel rails, you still might see ΔT 60° mentions. Not to worry as you can easily convert it to respective ΔT 50°. Refer to the following table:

To find out what heat output a ΔT 60°-set radiator will deliver at ΔT 50°, multiply the mentioned output BTUs with 0.781. For example, when you scroll down the technical specifications you see that the radiator’s heat output at ΔT 60° is 2000 BTUs. To calculate the radiator’s heat output at ΔT 50°, follow this step: ΔT 50°= 2000 x 0.781= 1562 BTUs. (0.781 is the value from above conversion table). Now, this is what that radiator will deliver in a ΔT 50° setting. The conversions are important to add accuracy to the heat output that can be achieved. You need these calculations as a basis of your further calculations for finding your room’s heat requirements-- for example, if your calculation is based on ΔT 50° and you choose radiators whose output is based on ΔT 60°, then the output of your radiators will be too low.
Still a lot of reading and calculations? Don’t worry as Trade Plumbing experts have a surprise attached at the end of this page.
The exact above information can be used to go vice-versa with calculation Delta 60 from Delta 50 mentioned radiator heat outputs.

So, when comparing radiator outputs and prices be sure to check which ΔT is being quoted.
Clear your Delta-Concepts:
- Delta 60 doesn’t mean more efficiency or good quality as compared to Delta 50. It just means more heat required by the boiler system to feed to your radiator.
- According to your room’s requirements, you can opt any Delta value radiators but make sure that you don’t go to a much higher value of heat output than your space requires. Balance your electricity bills and participate in energy-saving for the next generations!
Once your Delta-concepts are clear you can use the following Delta-conversion calculator to shift from BTUs at a Delta to BTUs at the other Delta. Try it a few times and you’ll be a pro as it is very user-friendly and easy.
Good luck with choosing the best and right radiator for your room.
