Hand Rail

If you have social media, the chances are you’ve seen the beautiful glossy bathrooms of modern times, with their brass finishes, terrazzo tiles and, of course — the perfect bathroom radiator, AKA the towel rail

Thanks to modern technology and advancements in certain materials, towel rails have become an affordable staple in most homes across Britain. However, before diving in and purchasing the most attractive option (we’ve been there), we recommend reading our comprehensive guide to all things bathroom wall radiators and ensuring you’re buying the perfect fit for your space, needs and design.

Whether you’re revamping your en-suite, renovating your new home or just fancy a more efficient option, let TradePlumbing do the hard work for you, and you’ll be well on your way to the bathroom of your dreams.

  • Your Fuel Source

If you have a central heating system, installing a brand-new towel rail is simple. Plumb it into existing valves or splurge and buy some fancy new ones, and you’ll have a perfect place to store your towels and ensure they’re cosy and warm after your shower; a must as the winter months draw in!

If you live in a flat or high-rise building with low pressure, all hope is not lost; opt for an electric-only rail. A simple and cost-effective solution, you’ll reap the benefits of a toasty warm towel without having the costly installation of a new radiator. Not just for the bathroom, install electric-only heat sources in places such as conservatories or garages to avoid incurring high costs and higher energy bills than if you were going to add a whole new radiator into the central heating system.

It’s important to note that if you intend to install any new radiator in your central heating system, you will likely require planning permission.

  • Where Shall I Install My New Bathroom Radiator?

As previously stated, it’s easier to install your new heating appliance in the old place, though sometimes this can mean you don’t have the height required for a modern towel rail; one example of this may be if your radiator sits below your window.

Aside from this, here are some other scenarios to consider before ordering and installing your new heating system.

- The shape of your bathroom space, for example, a small space, may not require a large towel rail.

- The dimensions, make sure your rail will fit!

- Your existing pipework and if you require pipe covers.

- Bathroom fittings: you don’t want burning knees when you’re sitting on the loo!

- The size of the appliance that you require to provide adequate heat.

Ideally, you should also install your radiator on the coldest wall of your house; however, thanks to modern insulation, this isn’t as essential anymore if the dynamics of your bathroom won’t allow you to do so.

  • Are Towel Rails a Viable Heating Option?

Depending on several factors, a towel rail could be a brilliant option for heating your room. Bathrooms naturally have a warm and humid climate, and we often spend a lot of time in them— sans clothing, so we must keep it heated to avoid creating a haven for dampness to thrive and so you’re not shivering while you shower!

A towel rail creates enough heat output to warm your towels adequately, and if your bathroom is small or you’re installing one in a cloakroom, it’s likely enough to keep you toastie; however, if you’re refitting your largest bathroom, you may want to consider some different options.

Before we discuss your options, strap in for a BTU (British Thermal Units) lesson and the appropriate amount needed to ensure the perfect level of warmth in your rooms; as a general guide, your bathroom should be heated to around 21°C though that may feel too hot or cold for some folks.

Once you’ve decided on the optimum temperature, measure the height, width and length of your space in metres and answer the following questions;

- Do you have windows?

- Are they single or double-glazed?

- What is above and below the room you intend to heat?

- Do you have cavity wall insulation?

Okay, now you’re equipped with your measurements and have considered the external factors at work to heat your bathroom, we recommend heading to an online BTU calculator and working out the optimum heat output for your specific room. If you’re still unsure, we recommend calling a certified engineer who can aid you with the right choice.

However, as a general rule, opt for lower heat outputs for smaller rooms and higher for larger rooms; check out our range of towel rails ordered by Heat Output to be well on your way to the bathroom of your dreams.

  • Which Towel Rail is suitable for my room?

Small Bathrooms with high traffic would benefit from vertical ladder-style towel rails in modern anthracite, dramatic black or traditional chrome. In cloakrooms, you may even opt for a miniature wall-hung version with shelving at the top to avoid taking up too much space.

However, ensuring a more extensive rail in larger family bathrooms will mean adequate heat output and warm, fluffy towels for all the family. We love floor-standing options for a traditional feel with style.
